Your gateway to discovering the best hidden gems and postcard moments around the world
Travel 101
I know plenty of seasoned travelers and most of them will all share a few common tips to making the most of your adventures. I would like to recommend the single best thing you can do to help make the most of your trip, and that is do some homework.
If you and your travel partners are detailed planners or complete fly by the seat of your pants types, either way it’s best to do some homework before you leave your house. A few simple searches will tell you about the customs process that awaits and how long of a drive or ride it will be before you can check your luggage and maybe even grab a quick nap before you tear up the town exploring your newest gem.
Review a quick blog about one basic history, favorite sites by both tourists and locals, weather, prices, crime and transportation options, all these quick reads will enhance your trip by helping you avoid a few setbacks, keep you safe, get your travel partners motivated about the upcoming trip and help you make on the spot decisions that will inevitably occur due to traffic, weather, crowds or a host of other factors that are beyond your control.
Having information already stored in the teams brains will only help you enjoy your customized experience that much more.
Park City Skiing
Ok, you’re asking what does the number one skiing destination have anything to do with intimate adventures? Everything! I wish we could could reduce the hoards of tourists at all the most favorite destinations but we can’t so learning how to manage the crowds and find the secret spots no matter how busy can help make your trip top notch.
As my home turf for winter adventures, hitting the slopes at Park City has been quite memorable and I am here to share some lessons learned.
Parking- Arrive in the cabriolet lot by 830 am if you want a spot. The last leg from I-80 takes 20-40 min on the worst days
Not all Blues and Blacks are equal – I remember my first trip down Silver Queen as a good warm up run from not skiing in over a year. Easy blue right? Just a steep as most blacks but luckily it was well groomed that day.
All in the name – Sometimes the name is a give away. A fairly unassuming black diamond called The Hoist seemed innocent enough. The run looked perfect, not a soul in site, protected from the wind and then I learned the hard way why it earned its name. Ya see a hoist is a device found on medical evacuation helicopters whereas a medical professional can drop straight down from the aircraft. Hence the name. Had it not been for the 10 inches of fresh powder, I may have had to walk down that run.
Lunch – If you want to sit down in any of the favorite mid mountain spots, either arrive before 1030 or after 1230.
Best runs for all abilities- After a few months I kept finding myself going back to these few favorites; BOA, White water, Copperhead, Cascade, Sanctuary, Rhapsody/The Drop, Sidewinder, Assessment, Kings Crown, Mother lode Meadows, Alpenglow and Aplande.
